There is something about Halloween that affects me more and more every year. I love it so much, everything about it. I was one of those kids who stayed in on sunny days watching The Wolf Man on television. I holed up in my room reading Famous Monsters magazine and building Aurora model kits of The Creature From The Black Lagoon,“ et al. I lived on Cemetery St. and my last name sounded like “ghoul.” Halloween was always my day.
Halloween kicks off the holiday season, but it’s not based on any heavy religious or cultural observation and, as such, no one is excluded. Halloween does not discriminate. Your religion, your nationality… none of that matters. All Halloween asks of you is to indulge your willingness to enjoy Halloween. Dress up like a vampire. Or a ghost. Or a polar bear. Meet up with your friends and go get some candy.
How? Just cheerfully ask for it. Otherwise, it’s free. No one wants your money We’re all having the same good time.
This year is exceptionally special to me because, first and foremost, my kids are still little, so I get to go trick-or-treating. Second, my podcast, the Dana Gould Hour, has its annual Halloween special up and, with Rick Baker, Joel Hodgson and Ken Reid, it’s over three hours of spooky, good times. And, like a Fun Size Snickers, it’s also free! Go get it at:
Lastly, I created a TV show that has its first sneak preview tonight. It’s called Stan Against Evil, and, had it been on when I was a kid, it would have been one of those shows I holed up in my room to watch. In fact, it’s pretty much a witches brew of the shows I did watch: a little Night Gallery, a little Dark Shadows, a little Kolchak: The Night Stalker, (or if you’re 18 – 34, a little Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, a little Twin Peaks, a little The X-Files).
The show takes place in a fictional version of my hometown, its main character is a fictional version of my dad, it’s scary and funny and, like Halloween candy, it’s yours for the asking. Why not check it out for yourself tonight at 11 PM on IFC. Or just click on this link right here:
I will close with one request: please be so very, very, very careful ton
